Healthy Aging A Personal Note It’s a big year! This birthday marks several decades of living. Most of us are in agreement that it is important to consider our approaches to our bodies as we mature. This topic frequents conversation, as I work with people and their health everyday. Currently, I am working toward a certification in Geriatric Massage Therapy from Sharon Puszko, PhD, CMT, co-founder and current instructor of Day Break Geriatric Massage Institute. Getting Practical When I was in my 20’s and 30’s my athletic trainer and nutritionist made very specific suggestions as to activities and food choices which supported my goals and abilities of that time. Now I am 50 years old and my personal plan has been modified. Why? The regime I used in my 20’s was not working and my goal is to understand how I can better manage my daily energy as well as aches and pains. I am grateful that my life study is massage therapy and neuromuscular care; I am not naïve as to the changes in physiology. I am slow to embrace some of the changes. I listen to my body and put it together with literature by health care professions and friends who are actively participating in their health. I find myself making sound decisions about my body, mind and spirit… and I feel really good about my choices. “Joy in modification!” Personal thoughts about changes in physiology, activities of the moment and decisions impact overall health more than I ever dreamed. I realize my self esteem can become affected by my physical energy, abilities and health; I am motivated to take an active role in my health. Allow me to share the knowledge gained from the certification at Day-Break Geriatric Massage Institute. Application of these specific techniques assist you, or family member, in maintaining a more pain free physical body which can add to the quality of your day! “Careful consideration of medical history is one key to a successful massage session” Poignant Points: Practical application of massage and neuromuscular techniques over 25 years in practice, supported by health care journal articles give rise to the following list…
